Toddler Community

In 2000, in response to overwhelming demand, we created a program for toddlers. The Toddler Community is a specially-designed environment for children ages 18 – 36 months which is housed in its own building with its own playground areas.

There are two classes where children as young as 18 months participate for 5 days a week.

Welcoming toddlers (and their parents) is a delicate task! We strive to create a balance between a toddler’s conflicting needs for security and independence. The teachers—specially trained by Dr. Silvana Montanaro to work with this age group—help little ones separate, encourage children to make simple choices, and provide support and guidance as children attempt new tasks.

The Toddler Community includes:

  • Age-appropriate Montessori materials
  • Activities which support sensory development—so vital at this age
  • Opportunities for children to develop “practical life” skills—taking care of themselves, the classroom environment, and the people around them
  • Art, music, and movement activities
  • Outdoor play
  • Toilet teaching in conjunction with parents—children still in diapers may enroll in either class
“The work of the child is to construct the adult he or she is to become.”
(Maria Montessori)
